Media Literacy Project for Fifth Grade Social Studies

This is a lesson that can be used in a Fifth Grade classroom. It begins with showing "The Great American Melting Pot" video by Schoolhouse Rock. Then I have students break apart the video and discuss the questions being asked on each slide. Students analize the video at a production standpoint and a historical standpoint. After examination of the video, students will then complete a video project in small groups. The powerpoint can be directly used in the classroom and requires no teacher notes. The student project may take longer than a few class periods to complete. The Media literacy project displays a great way to integrate technology into instruction and assessment in the classroom. The video to the right is an example of what a finished student project may look like.
